September 16, 1991 Albemarle building wins
state award
The owners of the Albemarle
Opera House Building will receive the 1991 Gertrude S. Carraway Award of Merit. Catherine Pickier and Gene
Starnes received word early this week that they would get the annual award from
the Historic Preservation Foundation of North Carolina. The facade restoration of the
Opera House Building was completed in spring of 1991. The work was done by
Mitchell Smith of S&D Construction Co. of Albemarle, assisted by Doug
Burns, an architect with AEC of Charlotte. The restoration competed with
33 other projects from throughout the state. This is the second time this
award has been given in Stanly County. The Stanly County Historic Preservation
Commission received the award several years ago for publishing “Badin: A
Town at the Narrows.’’ The Opera House Corp. will
conduct an open house during the Stanly County Sports Festival on Sept. 28. Back to Facade and Feasibility Study
