The Old Opera House Stands Empty Now

From Albemarle, Stanly County Centennial: The Bridge from Yesterday -- Into Tomorrow  May 11-18, 1957

The Opera House of Albemarle was built in 1907 by F.E. Starnes, Doc Frank Parker, and J.C. Parker.  The structure is the one in which Starnes Jewelry Store and Merits Shoe Store are now on the first floor.  It was a magnificent building and many remarkable shows from New York and other cities made their appearance there in the glamorous days of living entertainment and one-night stands.

Those with vivid imaginations say that the ghosts of past performers walk the once spacious stage and songs of past musical comedies are heard very, very faintly by those who remember marveling at the wonders behind the exquisite satin curtains of yesteryear.
