Albemarle Opera House - Anniversary

~Press release November 2007~

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the completion of the building on West Main Street in Albemarle that is occupied by Starnes Jewelers, Satin and Lace Bridal Shop and the Albemarle Opera House.

It is our understanding that Starnes Jewelry Store is the oldest family operated retail business in Albemarle. It all started in 1898 when F.E. Starnes rode into town on a bicycle and opened his store on Second Street in Downtown Albemarle. A few years later, in 1907, Mr. Starnes, D.F. Parker and J.C. Parker built a new building just around the corner at 127 West Main Street. The building is now owned by Francis Eugene Starnes and Katherine Pickler, descendants of the original builders.

Starnes Jewelry Store has occupied half the street front portion of the building since it was completed in 1907. The present occupant of the other half is Satin and Lace, a bridal/formal shop. The second floor is the Albemarle Opera House.

November 8,9 and 10 Starnes and Satin and Lace will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the building with a number of events and special sales. Starnes will say thank you for 109 years in Albemarle and 100 years at 127 West Main Street by having a three-day sale with many items either under $100 or reduced to $100. Many other items will be reduced up to 50%.

November 10 at 2:00 p.m. John Parker and Christopher James Epps, great-great grandsons of F. E. Starnes, and John Mark Obeck, Jr. and Reid Joseph Obeck, great-great grandsons of J. C. Parker, will unveil a plaque commemorating the addition of the Albemarle Opera House to the National Register of Historical Buildings. Refreshments will be served, and there will be tours of the Albemarle Opera House led by people in period dress.

Starnes and Satin and Lace invite everyone to join them in this special celebration.
